Alpha Phi Fraternity House, 1938

508 East Armory Street

Georgian Revival architectural style

The Beta Alpha chapter of the Alpha Phi fraternity (sorority) was established at the University of Illinois in 1920, and three years later members bought a 1909 Tudor Revival house to serve as their chapter house.  Over the next twodecades, residents held dances, teas, and sales to raise funds for a new chapter house.  In 1938, Decatur architect Charles Harris oversaw a major renovation of the house and a new Georgian Revival addition constructed by Edward N. DeAtley.  The Alpha Phi sorority house reflects a style of living that has been an important component of student life at the University of Illinois for many decades.
